When did the visa slots will open for spring 2023 for USA?
Updated on: 22 Jun 2023 Latest Update: The fee for US student visas will increase from $160 to $185 effective May 30, 2023, according to a recent announcement by the US Department of State. The United States Department of State has announced a much-needed update for international students looking to study in the US.
Starting from March 1st, 2023, prospective F-1 student visa applicants can now apply up to 365 days before their academic term begins. Previously, F1 visa applicants were required to schedule their visa interview within 120 days of receiving their I-20 form, which is a document issued by the university or college that the applicant intends to attend in the United States.
This change means that universities can now accept and issue I-20 forms 12-14 months before term time, giving students more time to complete the visa application process. However, students will still only be allowed to travel to the US on the visa 30 days before the start of their program.
Is US F1 visa slots open for fall 2023?
NEW DELHI: Much to the relief of students in India who are planning to join universities in the US in the Fall of 2023; interview slots for visas are now available. In an update on social media on Sunday evening, the US Embassy has announced that student visa interviews appointments are now open for mid-July to mid-August across India.
The students have been advised to visit UStraveldocs.com to book their appointments immediately. In an interview to the Times of India last week, an US Embassy official had said that: “We have already released tens of thousands of appointments and we have tens of thousands of additional appointments for July and August that will be released soon.
Applicants should aim to check our website once or twice per day for this upcoming appointment release.” The US diplomatic mission in India expects to interview more students than ever before this year, according to a recent press release. Adarsh Khandelwal, co-founder and director of education consultancy Collegify, feels that now since bulk student visa interview slots are open for July and August, students in India who are waiting for their F-1 visas should book any date that is available themselves, instead of using the services of agents or touts.
What is the best time to apply for F1 visa?
What is the Most Appropriate Time to Apply for F-1 Student Visa? – One of the most common and highly thought upon questions among study abroad students is-“When can I apply for F-1 visa?”. Once you decide on the college you will attend, and after you get a favourable decision from universities you have applied to, take a final call on which college you want to attend,
120 days before your program start date: As part of U.S. visa guidelines, visas cannot be issued more than 120 days earlier than the program start date indicated on your form I-20, After thorough preparation of your financial documents : Part 7 of I-20 indicates the amount required to cover the first year’s expenses. It includes not only tuition fees and living expenses, but also incidental expenses. Solvency certificate issued by your bank to get your I-20 may not be sufficient to show to the visa officer.
Suggested: How to Plan Financially for Your Visa? Visa officers may want to look at annual family income plus the liquid assets of the sponsors to ensure that the student will be able to support his study and in the US till his program ends. If there is still a shortfall, you can apply for an education loan from a trustworthy bank.
How can I check U.S. visa availability slots?
Check US Visa Slots This checkvisaslots.com’s extension will provide access to check & share the US visa slots availability. Summary: checkvisaslots.com is a collaborative screenshot sharing platform to check the US visa slots availability at US Consulates/Embassy in India.
The screenshot sharing platform helps to check the availability of US visa appointments. The platform supports many US visa types like Student Visa (F-1), Employment Visa (H-1B), Tourism & Business Visa (B1, B2, B1/B2). Detailed Story: Checking US visa slot availability has been a hurdle to at least 5.5 million Indians every year for multiple reasons 1.
Lack of slots availability 2. Locking out for 72 hours if the portal *thinks* the user is a bot 3. Do not show the availability of the slots for 24 hours after 3-5 checks or refreshes To overcome all these hurdles and prevent being locked out by the visa portal just when needed the most, we, checkvisaslots.com with the help of fellow community members, who check for the visa availability slots, created this tool to share the availability of the slots when they log on to the CGI portal.

Did U.S. F1 visa slots open for rejected students?
HYDERABAD: It’s a long wait for those whose F1 visa application was rejected. Many have now been waiting for over a year to get a visa slot to once again try their luck at fulfilling their dream of studying in the United States. Several candidates said they have deferred their admissions multiple times in the hope that slots will be opened for them.
Some of them even gave their interviews at US consulates outside the country but got rejected there as well. The F1 visa allows you to enter the US as a full-time student at an accredited college or university. “My husband got his F1 last May and went to the US for studies. I appeared for my interview in August 2022 but got rejected.
Ever since I have been waiting for slots to open so that I can join him in the US,” said Pavithra N, who resigned from her job to go for masters. Pavithra said that she went to Vietnam this March, but even there her visa was rejected. “As many are going to other countries for visa interviews, the rejection rate seems to have increased.
I just hope slots are open for refused candidates,” she added. Another candidate, Younus Ubaid, who completed his BTech in 2021, said “I wanted to leave for the US after graduation. I gave my interview in July but got rejected. Now, there are no slots available.” Though the US consulate has recently released slots for student visas, no slots are said to be available for candidates who got their visas rejected post July 2022.
Some slots, however, are said to be made available for those whose visa was rejected before July 2022. “I have deferred my admission five times till now. I gave my interview in June last year, but my visa was not approved. Fortunately, I have now got a slot for next week,” said Manideep, who is working at a startup in the city.

What is the average waiting time for F1 visa?
US Visa Processing Times for Different Visa Types – Here are the processing times for the US visas:
Visa Type | Processing Time | Description |
E-1 visa | 2 to 4 weeks | The E-1 visa processing time depends on the caseload of the US Embassy or USCIS if you applied from within the US. After the processing period is over, you will be notified about whether you have been given the visa or you were denied. |
E-2 visa | 4 to 6 weeks | If you are an employee, it takes around 2 weeks. The processing time varies, however, with the workload of the US Embassy, so if you do not receive an answer within those time frames, it does not mean that your visa application was denied. |
E-3 visa | 2 months | The processing time might take longer as the Embassy might have a bigger workload. |
F-1 visa | immediately after the interview | The F-1 visa processing time is much shorter than other visas. The processing of this type of visa actually happens before your interview. The interview is the last step for the US Embassy to assess whether they should give you an F-1 visa or not. In most cases, you will get the response on this visa immediately after the interview. At the end of the visa interview, the interviewer might congratulate you for getting the visa, or will provide you with a document letting you know the reason for denial. There are, however, cases where the response and processing of the F-1 visa takes a few days, so you should be patient if that happens. |
F-2 visa | Few days to 2 weeks | After your F-2 interview, you might get a response immediately from your interviewer on whether you got the visa or you were denied. However, it is more common that the wait will be a few days or weeks. This is because the US Embassy will take their time to look over your documents and responses. They will particularly focus on you and the F-1 visa holder’s financial situation to determine whether you can cover your expenses while in the US. |
J-1 visa | 1 to 4 months | The Waiver Review Division will go through your case and make a recommendation. They will send the recommendation to USCIS, which will then make the final decision on whether you will be allowed to stay or not. |
Q-1 visa | 15 days to 3 months | After the processing time, they will contact you to inform you whether you have been approved the visa or not. |
M-1 visa | At least 4 weeks | The processing time for the M-1 visa is quite short. The processing happens before your visa interview. There are cases when you get a response immediately after your visa interview ends, with the interviewer either congratulating you or stating the reasons for the rejection of your visa application. |
B-1 visa | A couple of weeks to 2 months | The processing times for the B-1 visas are not exact. This depends on the workload of the US Embassy and other factors that they take into consideration. |
B-2 visa | A couple of weeks to 2 months | Processing times for B-2 tourist visas and US visitor visas differ from country to country. |
H-1B visa | 3 to 6 months | However, US Embassies in different countries/cities have various processing times, so it is best to contact them for any details, or visit the US State Department or USCIS for approximate processing times. |
H-1B1 visa | 4 to 6 months | The time also depends on seasonal fluctuations, so for more accurate information, you should contact the US Embassy where you applied. |
H-2A visa | Varies | Processing times vary for H-2A visas since it is seasonal and sometimes it might take longer. However, it is recommended for US employers to file USCIS petitions at least 60 days, but no more than 120 days before they need the foreign workers. The US government takes priority in H-2A visas so they expedite the process due to the fact that agricultural work is seasonal. |
H-3 visa | 4 to 6 weeks | You will have to make sure that the institution petitions on your behalf at least 6 months before the training program starts. After that, you will have to gather your documents and proceed with the application. Depending on the demand at your local US Embassy, it might take one to three months for them to get back to you with a final decision on whether you will get the H-3 visa or not. |
H-4 visa | Varies | Since your H-4 status is dependent on the status of the H type visa holder so your spouse or parent, it might take as long as it takes to process their visa. If, for example, your spouse is applying for an H-2A visa and you apply together, your visa will take the same time to process as your spouse’s. If you are applying separately though, the time it takes to process the H-4 visa will be up to the US Embassy and the workload that they have. |
L-1 visa | 3 to 4 months | Blanket petitions are processed faster than individual ones. In addition, employers have the option of obtaining premium processing for the additional fees, which will speed up the L-1A processing time and you’ll get a response within 1 to 3 weeks. |
L-2 visa | 15 days to 1 month | Depending on the Embassy’s workload and other factors, it might take longer. |
K-1 visa | A few months | |
R-1 visa | 8 to 9 months | It takes some time to get the R-1 visa approved. After the employer sends in the petition, it takes around 6 months for USCIS to respond, due to the fact that they might have to visit the premises of the organization. If USCIS has visited the organization before and approved them, then premium processing is available for an extra $1,225 fee. With premium processing, you will get a response on your visa in about 2 weeks. If you do not have premium processing, after USCIS approves the petition, it might take another 2 to 3 months for the visa to process. |
P-1 visa | 3 to 6 months | It is a long wait, but the US institutions offer the opportunity to pay for premium processing. If you choose to have premium processing of your visa, you must pay an additional $1,225 and you will get the response for your visa within 15 days. If the US institutions do not notify you of your visa status within 15 days, your money is reimbursed. |
I visa | 10 days | |
O visa | 2 to 3 months | If you do not want to wait this long to get your response, then there is a way to speed up the process. For an additional $1,225, premium processing is available for the O visas. Premium processing means that your visa will be processed within 15 days and you will know the answer much sooner. |
C visa | 5 working days | Since the transit visa is for a short duration of time, its processing time is generally faster than for other visas. |
T visa | Varies | The processing time for the T visa varies. USCIS does not give an estimate or a time that applicants will have to wait for their visa to be processed after applying. This means that the processing time varies from person to person and is made based on the evidence that they give. |
U visa | 12 to 18 months | The U visa takes quite some time to process. The processing times may vary widely though, since, for example, if you are required to send in additional evidence to USCIS, processing times may become longer. |

How far in advance can you book U.S. visa appointment?
Q.18 How long in advance of my intended date of travel should I apply for a US visa? – We recommend highly that applicants start the application process about 3 months in advance of their intended date of travel since appointments are usually full 2-3 months in advance.
Also, visa applications are now subject to a greater degree of scrutiny than in the past. Many applicants are informed of the need for additional screening at the time they submit their applications and are being advised to expect delays. The time needed for adjudication of individual cases will continue to be difficult to predict.
We recommend that individuals build in ample time before their planned travel date when seeking to obtain a visa. back to top

Is US visa processing time likely to fall by mid 2023?
NEW DELHI: The waiting period for issuance of American visas is expected to see a significant fall by summer of 2023 and the number of visa applications is projected to reach around 1.2 million, a senior official of the US embassy said on Thursday. “India is number one priority for Washington (for issuance of visas).
- Our aim is to bring the situation to the pre-Covid-19 level by the middle of next year,” the official said.
- India has been one of the very few countries where applications for US visas saw a major upswing after coronavirus-related travel restrictions were lifted.
- Considering the long wait time for grant of visas, the US is also rolling out a series of initiatives including hiring of more personnel and increasing the “drop box” facilities, the official said.
The plan is to issue around one lakh visas every month. The official said the US has already identified H (H-1B) and L category visas for Indians as its priority and nearly 1,00,000 slots were released recently for those wanting to renew the visas. The wait time for certain categories has already been brought down to around nine months from earlier 450 days.
The official said the wait time for B1, B2 (business and tourism) visas is also being brought down from around 9 months. The official also said that India is expected to move to the number two place from current number three in terms of the number of visas being issued by the US. Currently, Mexico and China are ahead of India.
The US will initially focus on applicants using the “drop box” facility. The official said priority is also being accorded to cut the waiting time for the students’ visas, especially for those looking for renewal of their visas. The process used to apply for renewal of a US visa without the visa interview is known as the drop box facility.
