Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme – The National Policy on Education-1986 envisaged setting up of residential schools, to be called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, that would bring out the best of rural talent. It was felt that children with special talent or aptitude should be provided opportunities to progress at a faster pace by making good quality education available to them irrespective of their capacity to pay for it.
- Such education would enable students from rural areas to compete with their urban counterparts on an equal footing; seamlessly assimilating and intefrating them into the mainstream of the society.
- The Navodaya Vidyalaya System which began as a unique experiment, is today unparalleled in the annals of school education in India and elsewhere.
Its significance lies in the selection of talented rural children as the target group and the attempt to provide them quality education comparable to the best in a residential school system.
About JNV Nalanda – Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Rajgir, Nalanda was established in 1987 in accordance with NPE, 1986. It is situated in a 20-acre plot in sylvan and serene surroundings with beautiful landscapes in Rajgir Town of District- Nalanda, Bihar State.
- The Vidyalaya is at a distance of 0 Km from Rajgir Station and 24 Km from Bihar Sharif District Headquarters.
- Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya are fully residential, co-educational schools affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi having classes up to 12 standard.
- Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous Organization under the ministry of HRD, Government of India, manages these Vidyalayas.
Admission to these Vidyalayas is through a test called JNVST to Class VI. Children are predominantly from rural areas and there is 30% reservation of girls. Quality modern education with a strong component of culture, promotion of National Integration through student migration between Hindi speaking ad Non-Hindi speaking states and following a three language formula with vernacular as medium of instruction up to Class-VIII are some of the salient features of this unique educational venture.

Total 661 functional residential schools have been sanctioned in 638 districts of India with some special case institutes. These are administrated by eight regional offices (see table below) with jurisdiction over different states and UTs.
About JNV – Brief History of JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA In 1985, the Government of India has decided to set up co-educational institutions known as Model Schools, one in each district, essentially to provide good quality modern education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.
Accordingly, two schools called as Navodaya Vidyalayas, one at Amravati (Maharastra) and another at Jajjar (Hariyana) were started in 1985-86 and presently more than 595 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are spread across the length and breadth of the country in all the States and Union Territories except Tamil Nadu.
JNV, Banekuchi was established in 1994 in Mukalmua of Nalbari District in a temporary building and the vidyalaya was shifted to the present complex in Banekuchi in the year 2005. SALIENT FEATURES OF OUR VIDYALAYA

Admission to class six in Navodaya schools: Apply online before November 30 The last date for submitting the online applications for admission to standard six at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools is November 30. The applications are for the next academic year.
- The applicants must be currently studying in class 5 at a recognized school.
- Meanwhile, the candidates can only apply to the schools in the districts where they reside.
- Those who have passed standard 5 earlier need not apply.
- Students studying in recognized open schools have to complete ‘B’ level course before applying.
There is no application fee. There are 14 Navodaya schools in Kerala, one in each district. These schools follow CBSE syllabus in classes 6 – 12. The students have to live on campus to complete their education. The boarding school offers free education, accommodation, food, text books and uniform.
- There is a monthly fee of Rs 600 in classes 9 – 12.
- However, students below poverty line, girl students and members of scheduled caste communities need not pay the fee.
- The candidates applying for admission must not be born before May 1, 2009 and after April 30, 2013.
- There is no age relaxation for anyone including candidates belonging to scheduled communities.

Students claiming admission under the 75% rural quota should have completed their classes 3, 4 and 5 in rural areas.
- In case they have studied, at least for a day, in an urban area, they wouldn’t be considered for admission under this quota.
- The medium of instruction until class eight is Malayalam.
- After that, Mathematics and Science would be in English while the medium of instruction for Social Science would be Hindi.
The students can sit for the CBSE board exams in classes ten and twelve. One third of the seats are reserved for girl students. The reservation for the Scheduled Caste/ Tribe would be based on the proportion of population in each district. However, it wouldn’t go down below 15/7.5% respectively.
Entrance exam dates The selection to the Navodaya schools would be based on the entrance test that is scheduled on April 30, 2022. Mental ability – 40 questions, 50 marks, 60 minutes Arithmetic – 20 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes Language – 20 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes Total – 80 objective type questions, 100 marks and 120 minutes
There is no negative mark for the wrong answers. The candidates could choose the medium of instruction in class five as the language of the examination. The results of the entrance test would be published in June. This is a one – time exam which can be attempted only once.
