The notification was issued on January 31, 2020, but came into force from the 2023-24 academic year. The decision has affected a large number of pupils, “and it would be illogical to ask them to waste their entire year for no fault on their part,” stated one of the petitions which sought that the notification be declared as “unjust, improper, illegal and unconstitutional.” Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the school authorities and parents were not informed about the notice in 2020, and they learned about it now when schools refused to admit children in Grade 1 if they have not completed 6 years of age as on June 1 (of that year).

AHMEDABAD: The state government has decided to not relax the revised age criterion for Class 1 admissions despite several demands from school administrations. The state government has decided that the students who do not qualify for the age requirement of 6 years on June 1 will be admitted to Balvatika so that their academic year is not wasted.

1. In December, the state education department asked the schools to admit students who are aged 6 as on June 1, 2023 to Class 1.
2. Earlier, the minimum age criterion for Class 1 admission was 5 years on June 1.
3. The decision was made in 2020 but the implementation of the rule will begin from the 2023-24 academic year that begins on June 1.

According to sources, the decision was taken during the meeting of a taskforce. The taskforce is made of members from the department of education, tribal affairs, women and child development and social justice. Sources said that the taskforce decided that the education department has already ordered that government, grant-in-aid and private schools should set up Balvatika and admit students who do not qualify for Class 1 admission.

On January 7, the state’s school management association had written a letter to the state education minister seeking a relaxation in the new age criterion for admission to Class 1. The association demanded that the last date be extended to June 14 instead of June 1 because the number of students is likely to fall as there are many children who don’t complete the minimum age required on June 1.

The state education department had announced that those students who are not eligible to get admissions in Class 1 due to revised age criterion, will be admitted to Balvatika, a special section created in schools for this purpose. The taskforce decided that the pre-primary schools will be brought under the purview of the education department and their registrations will be made mandatory.
