Lord Ayyappa’s natal star is Utram. The purpose of the 41-day “Vratam” is to establish healthy habits of discipline and practise. It all comes down to creating positive habits over time, which can be done by exercising restraint and praying. Black is the suggested colour for clothing during the “Vratam” period since it symbolises separation from material.

  1. Ettunirakkal/Irumudi This ceremony involves getting “Irumudi kettu” ready and packing it for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
  2. It is made under a Guruswamy’s supervision.
  3. Only those who wear the Irumudi kettu on their heads are permitted to ascend the 18 holy steps that lead to the temple because they are thought to have observed the austerities and are therefore qualified to do so.Others who wish to approach the sanctum sanctorum for worship must use a different passageway to the north.

After the opening prayers in the Kettunira, the sacred offering of ghee (clarified cow’s butter) is placed into a coconut after the fibrous shell has been removed.
