Vedas venerate women: Why Hindu community should completely open Sabarimala to women The entry of menstruating women to Sabarimala is being hotly debated now with warring parties taking hostile positions. While traditionalists strongly believe that any change in custom is unthinkable, feminists have declared open war against the antediluvian practice, raising the slogan ‘Happy to Bleed’. The issue needs to be discussed in a wider context. It must be remembered that the basis of Sanatana Dharma is the Vedas. The mantras which are used in daily poojas such as Bhagya Sooktha, Ganapathi, Saiva Manthras and Purusha Sooktha are all from the Vedas.

• The four Vedas never state anywhere that a woman’s body is impure or that she cannot do poojas during menstruation.
• Prohibiting women from entering temples and castigating them as impure is squarely against the teachings of the Vedas.
• There may have been restrictions imposed on women in the past but they are purely related to their health.

There could be health and security related issues in banning women from Sabarimala that is inside the deep forest but they are irrelevant in modern times. Agnihotra yagna, which is performed daily by vaidiks, is considered as mahayagna, which means prominent among all yagnas.

The Vedas stipulate that this yagna should be performed by both men and women without fail. If the yagna has to be performed daily, how can a woman do it during her monthly periods? In the Vedic age, there were no restrictions on women to perform rituals. Thousands of women have learned the Vedic rituals under me at the Kashyapa Ashram in the past two decades and are practicing them every day.

If mahayagna can be performed by menstruating women, there can be no ban on their temple entry during their monthly periods. Menstruation is a natural biological process that need not be considered as an impurity. How many male devotees can vow that they didn’t have nocturnal emission during the 41-day ‘vratha’.

• All these are biological processes that pose no hurdle in worshipping god.
• Even hard-core traditionalists didn’t block women from Vedic rituals.
• Madhavacharya, whom many see as a traditionalist, has asserted that women have the right to learn and perform rituals.
• He cites the examples of women such as Urvasi, Yami and Sami.

Such instances are innumerable in the Vedas. This being the case, I think it is a futile exercise to discuss whether women are allowed to visit temples or not. Women come to temples not to conduct poojas but to offer prayers and participate in poojas. Banning them in name of non-existing impurity has no logical or religious basis.

The tantri is the last word as far as temple rituals are concerned, but Vedas are above the tantri. No practices that are against the Vedas should be allowed to flourish. There should be a consultative body of scholars to convince the tantris the need to bring about timely changes. Such bodies did exist in ancient India, but I do not know whether such a system exists now.

There should not be any intermediary between God and devotee. Some people argue that Ayyappa is a complete celibate and hence he doesn’t want to see women. God is above all ‘gunas’ and emotions. Let us not forget that God who is latent in every bit of the universe shines in the heart of a menstruating woman too.

2. Let me remind them that prior to 1937 the majority in Kerala was not allowed to enter temples.
3. Many believed that hell will break loose if the untouchables are allowed temple entry.

The Hindu community should come forward to open the doors of Sabarimala to women. But one thing should be borne in mind. There are some vested interests who are bent on tarnishing the temple. Let women devotees launch an agitation for temple entry and the whole Hindu community should come forward to support them.

When to open Ganesh Chaturthi fast?

Each lunar month in Hindu calendar has two Chaturthi Tithis*. According to Hindu scriptures, Chaturthi Tithi belongs to Lord Ganesha. The Chaturthi after Amavasya (=new moon) is known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and the one after Purnimasi (=full moon) is known as Sankashti Chaturthi,

Chandra commented upon the looks of Lord Ganesha saying Ganesha has got big belly and elephant head. Hearing all these, the Lord Ganesha decided to punish Chandra to make him realise his mistake and be humble & polite. So, Lord Ganesha cursed Chandra saying that no one will worship the moon and whoever looks at the moon will face false allegations and suffer bad name even when innocent.

Hearing this punishment, Chandra got shattered and devastated; his rudeness and arrogance vanished in a jiffy. Chandra, along with other Gods, started worshipping Lord Ganesha to apologise and appease him again. At last, Lord Ganesha was pleased and decided to relieve Chandra from the curse but with a clause.

He said human beings can look at the moon on any day except that day of ‘Bhadrapada Chaturthi’. He said anyone who sees the moon on Bhadrapada Chaturthi will have to face false allegations. Since that day, ‘Bhadrapada Chaturthi’ is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Ganesh Chaturthi ( ISO : Gaṇeśa Caturthī ), also known as Vinayak Chaturthi ( Vināyaka Caturthī ) or Ganeshotsav ( Gaṇeśōtsava ), is a Hindu festival commemorating the birth of the Hindu god Ganesha, The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha’s clay idols privately in homes and publicly on elaborate pandals (temporary stages).
