Is Mother’s Day different in England?
Why is the british date for Mother”s Day (25th March) different to the one in Austria, or the USA, or anywhere else in the world for that matter (13th May)? | Notes and Queries | guardian.co.uk
- Why is the british date for Mother’s Day (25th March) different to the one in Austria, or the USA, or anywhere else in the world for that matter (13th May)?
- Daniel Eberharter, Glasgow UK
- Because it’s not “Mother’s Day”, it’s “Mothering Sunday”. March 25th (or the nearest Sunday) is nine months before December 25th (you work it out.) It was traditionally a day off for servants, who could use it to return home and visit their mothers, since they wouldn’t get to see them during the rest of the year, on average. “Mother’s Day” in the US is a modern (20th century) invention, and the date used is the date of the inventor’s mother’s birthday. Since Christianity in Britain is a lot older than some American woman who was born in the 19th century, I’ll stick with Mothering Sunday, thanks.
- Jac, Oxford, UK
- Our day, which is sometimes still called “Mothering Sunday”, is very old and was originally a Church service to celebrate motherhood and the birth of young – it’s got rather more to do with spring and rebirth than the American “Mothers Day”, which I believe was started by one particular woman in the late 19th or early 20th century, because she (and greetings card manufacturers) felt that mothers deserved a special day.
- Barry Sinclair, Tunbridge Wells, UK
- This might not be true, and I don’t have many details, but the UK mothers day is connected to Easter in some way. I think it’s when servants were allowed to go home to visit their mothers. Well, that’s what my mother told me. And in Argentina it’s in October.
- Vicky, Ilkley UK
- I can’t speak for other countries, but the traditional British date for Mothering Sunday (not Mother’s Day) is three weeks before Easter, the 4th Sunday in Lent. It is indeed the day when apprentices were allowed to go home. In earlier days it was a celebration of “mother church” – there would be a celebration at the mother or principal church of a city. Other countries evidently fix the day in a different way.
- Clive Gordon, Ruislip UK
- Mother’s Day in the US is always the second Sunday in May.
- Amy, Ohio USA

- During the Middle Ages the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent,
- This became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother’s Day.
Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health, originated Mother’s Day. On May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia, Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 U.S.
Pres. Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. Although Jarvis had promoted the wearing of a white carnation as a tribute to one’s mother, the custom developed of wearing a red or pink carnation to represent a living mother or a white carnation for a mother who was deceased. Over time the day was expanded to include others, such as grandmothers and aunts, who played mothering roles.
What had originally been primarily a day of honour became associated with the sending of cards and the giving of gifts, however, and, in protest against its commercialization, Jarvis spent the last years of her life trying to abolish the holiday she had brought into being.

Why is Mother’s Day different in different countries?
The Origins of Mother’s Day – Mother’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways around the world. Although many cultures may celebrate the same holiday, the way it’s integrated into society and the way it’s viewed will be altered through each country’s cultural lens.
- However, this difference in celebration may also be because of how the holiday originated in each society, for this too is different for each country.
- In past societies, such as Ancient Greece and Rome, festivals were to celebrate and honour Rhea and Cybele, the mother goddesses.
- Modern iterations of holidays to celebrate motherhood are most notably found in the Christian festival of “Mothering Sunday.” This was formerly a major tradition in the United Kingdom and certain parts of Europe, but over time it eventually faded in popularity.
It was brought back to popularity when it was merged with the American Mother’s Day holiday in the mid-20th century. The origins of Mother’s Day in America are linked to Anna Jarvis, who is seen as the creator of the modern Mother’s Day holiday. Originally, her mother put together a women’s group to promote health and friendship. Following her mother’s death in 1907, Jarvis held a memorial service at her mother’s church. However, due to the mass commercialisation of this holiday, Jarvis spent the latter years of her life attempting to abolish the holiday. In Australia, the holiday was first celebrated in 1924. A Sydney woman, Janet Heyden, frequented a hospital where she discovered many elderly, lonely mothers.
Heyden sought to help them and gift them with tokens of thanks and celebration of their role as mothers. To do this, Heyden invited a variety of schools and businesses to donate gifts to these women. This was a sensitive issue that many agreed to help with, as a lot of these women had lost their sons and husbands in World War I or, as a consequence of the war, had never been a wife or mother.
Because of the actions of Janet Heyden, Mother’s Day is typically celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Although it’s not recognised as an official holiday, many still celebrate it with their maternal figures.
