How successful is WPL?

What WPL’s success means for sportswomen, society and consumerism The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has found a place in the history books. The enthusiasm, stamina and athleticism of players, the reception from viewers and sponsors, and the momentum it gave for women’s participation in sports are tremendous. PREMIUM Alyssa Healy of UP Warriorz plays a shot during match eight of the Women’s Premier League between the the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the UP Warriorz held at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, March 10, 2023 (SPORTZPICS) The inaugural edition of the WPL player auction saw 87 players getting sold, and the five franchises — Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, UP Warriors and Royal Challengers Bangalore – spending ₹ 59.5 crore collectively in the auction.

Reports say the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) raised a total of ₹ 4,669.99 crore by selling WPL franchise rights for five years. The individual franchise values range from ₹ 757 crore to ₹ 1,289 crore. Dedicated Fan Base: What Does It Mean For Society? The fact that the franchises had a dedicated fan base has given the tournament and the players an even greater exposure than the country games.

These franchises, which also own the men’s teams, were tweeting and sharing glimpses of the games through their handles — needless to say, they already have millions of followers. That kind of a dedicated fan base is important, says Radha, who introduces herself as “obsessed with women’s sports” on Twitter.

The event was a big success, so much so that the BCCI is mulling the possibility of scheduling the next edition of WPL in the Diwali window. The cricketing body acknowledged that the tournament had a dedicated audience base which will only keep growing in the coming years. Women’s cricket in India started gaining attention as late as 2017 when the team finished second in the ICC World Cup.

But, five years on, the BCCI not only spoke about pay parity among players, but also introduced it. As a result, India became only the second country in world cricket after New Zealand to bring in pay parity. But, this was only the beginning. The WPL auctions saw some of the franchises’ strongest bids for players like Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur.

  • The event was also well-advertised, with giant posters of the players coming up at several prominent places in and around Mumbai.
  • Reports said official attendance during the games breached 30,000, with average turnouts ranging from 9,000-13,000 for most games on weekdays, too.
  • What could this mean from a broader perspective? While athletes like Karnam Malleshwari, Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal have inspired girls to choose sports, the WPL has raised the bar.

The upliftment of women not only comes in terms of the sport but also whenever we have had women champions, they have played a key role in breaking the glass ceiling, former tennis player Manisha Malhotra said. The true power of women being successful in sports, Malhotra says, is that they bring an element of empathy no one else in sports can.

  1. Sponsors Galore: What Does It Mean for Female Consumerism? Despite being a new property, the WPL franchises managed to attract strong interest from brands, particularly some women-centric ones and some newbies in sports sponsorship.
  2. Some brands have also inked two-year sponsorship contracts.
  3. We believe that the Women’s Premier League will be a turning point in Indian cricket,” Dhiraj Malhotra, CEO of Delhi Capitals, was quoted as saying in one of the dailies.

Some of the key sponsors in the tournament were JSW Paints, Sportsbuzz11, Navyasa, Yatra.com, Joy Personal Care, Galaxy Basmati Rice, Kajaria Ceramics, Mia by Tanishq, Dream11, Vega Beauty, Himalayan Face Care, Puma, Lotus Herbals, Ashok Leyland, Dream11 and Sonata Software.

  1. In addition, the Tata Group — title sponsor — had also bagged the right chest spot on all team jerseys.
  2. This needs to be seen in relation to the consumption in the direct-to-consumer (D2C) space.
  3. A report by Instamojo, an all-in-one D2C tech platform, said women dominated the space in 2022 as they accounted for most of the sales of D2C brands in India.

This was not just consumption-related but also on the entrepreneurial side. Reports say the Indian D2C market size — estimated to be at $55 billion in 2022 — is forecast to hit $100 billion in a couple of years, with an expected CAGR of 34.5 per cent during the 2022-2027 period.

  • Record Viewership: What Does It Mean For Women in Sport? According to reports, the league’s broadcasting and streaming partner Viacom18 claimed that the tournament’s inaugural season had delivered the highest viewership on any women’s event globally.
  • It referred to WPL’s digital footprint through Viacom18’s streaming app JioCinema, which clocked the highest watch time — more than 50 minutes per match per user.

This could have trickled down to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. “I think we are heading in the right direction. The big change that I had wanted to happen — equal opportunities — has already begun with the WPL, that too in grand style,” the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, was quoted as saying recently.

  1. For now, it looks like a promising start.
  2. However, how this could alter the sporting industry in the future and inspire generations of young girls to take up the sport and carve a niche for themselves needs to be seen.

How many games are there in the WPL?

WPL FAQs – Everything you need to know about the Women’s Premier League Everything you need to know about the inaugural Women’s Premier League After a long wait, the (WPL) is finally kicking off. Here is everything you need to know about India’s new T20 franchise league for women.

  • Right, so finally we have the Women’s IPL! Wait, or is it called something else? It’s called the Women’s Premier League or just WPL.
  • Cool, WPL.
  • So when does it start and where? It starts on March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai,,
  • Before you ask, there are five teams, 22 matches in all, including the final on March 26 at the Brabourne Stadium at the other end of the city.

So all matches are in Mumbai? What’s the format? Yes, all in Mumbai. Technically, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, which also comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. All the games will be played at just the two grounds mentioned above. The five teams will play each other twice in the round-robin stage.

  1. That makes it eight games per team and 20 league games.
  2. Then, the team that finishes on top cruises straight into the final and watches the teams placed second and third battle it out in an eliminator that decides the second finalist.
  3. What time are the matches? Most matches will start at 7.30pm IST, except on double-header days, when the first match will begin at 3.30pm, like in the IPL.

The WPL has four such double-headers. Interesting. Who owns these teams again? Three owners of IPL teams also bought teams here – Reliance got Mumbai Indians, the JSW and GMR group got Delhi Capitals, and Diageo bought Royal Challengers Bangalore. There are two new owners – Adani Sportsline bought Ahmedabad-based Gujarat Giants and Capri Global, a non-banking financial services company, took the Lucknow-based UP franchise, UP Warriorz (yes, that’s with a Z, not S). Is there the usual rule of four overseas players per XI, like in the IPL? That’s right. Except that if a team has an Associate player – she could be played as the fifth overseas player in the XI. Capitals were the only team to by an Associate player at the auction:, a left-arm quick, from USA.

  • What do the five squads look like? As per the rules, each squad has 15 to 18 members, with six overseas players each.
  • In full detail, along with their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Why aren’t these teams all playing at their home grounds then? The BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on the day of the players auction that the tournament may expand to more cities later on, but for now it’s all in Mumbai for logistical reasons – the fact that the tournament has been planned in a short period of time, only in the last few months.

So what happens if more than two teams finish on the same number of points for any of the top three places? Take out your calculator. Once the points are tied, the team with the most wins in the league stage will be placed higher. If the wins are also the same, the team with the higher net run rate will be placed higher.

  1. If the NRR is also equal, the team with the higher number of wickets taken per legal balls bowled in matches with results will be considered higher.
  2. Hopefully we won’t get that far.
  3. What happens if a match, say the final, is tied? You can throw that calculator out, we’re not counting boundaries.
  4. If the scores are level in any game, then a Super Over will be played.

If the Super Over is also tied, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. If it’s not possible to play or complete the Super Over, the match will be tied and both teams will be awarded one point each. If the Super Over is not possible in the eliminator or the final, then the team which finished higher on the table after the round-robin stage will be declared winner.

And what if there’s a rain-curtailed match, given all games are being played in and around Mumbai? Fair enough. Let’s also take climate change into account because it doesn’t (usually) rain in March in Mumbai. If it does, both teams need to bat a minimum of five overs to get a result, and the usual DLS rules apply.

Will the DRS be available? Yes. Each team will be allowed a maximum of two unsuccessful reviews per innings. UltraEdge and HawkEye technologies will be available to the third umpire for edge detection and ball-tracking. And we have the usual rules around concussion replacements and third umpires keeping tabs on bowlers overstepping? Yes, it’s all business as usual.
